ABDO launches ‘EYE TV’ News with ITN

News posted: 25/11/2013

Natasha Kaplinsky

The Association of British Dispensing Opticians has joined forces with ITN to create a dedicated news programme to provide a unified voice for sector.

National newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky will present the programme from the national news studios at ITN and the aim of the initiative is to develop eye health services and policy in a way that will serve all communities and shows how vital it is that opticians are seen as members of the primary healthcare team.

As part of ABDO’s aims of strengthening the voice of members, the programme will also challenge perceptions of dispensing opticians and with that celebrate the success of innovative organisations that deserve recognition on such a platform.

ITN Productions, the creative production hub at ITN, has commissioned the news programme. Simon Shelley, UK Director of Programming, will oversee the editorial and has said, “We’re delighted to be partnering with ABDO, creating content and a voice on the major themes affecting eye health and recognising professionals in the sector. Alongside interviews with the key players, we also want to bring to life some of the compelling stories from leading organisations that will continue to raise the importance of these issues in the public health agenda.”

Tony Garrett, General Secretary, Association of British Dispensing Opticians said, “ABDO is aware that most members of the public do not have a clear understanding of the vital role opticians play in the provision of primary healthcare and the full range of skills and services they can provide. The Association is therefore delighted to be forming a partnership with ITN to enable us to broadcast the benefits of professional eye care. We will also seek to dispel any misconceptions and reservations that may exist by providing objective, evidence-based information and news items.”

The programme will be premiered at the 2014 ABDO Conference and Exhibition, 30-31 March. It will reach all parts of the sector, healthcare partners including all CCG’s and government departments, and be distributed by ITN to their relevant networks in health, care and social care.
