Hamblin Memorial Prize

We are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the 2026 Hamblin Memorial Prize.

This prize was instigated by Paul Hamblin when chairman of Theodore Hamblin opticians in honour those whose profession had been dispensing optics. Paul Hamblin understood the importance of optics and its place in providing patients with the best possible vision.

Last presented in 2023 the Hamblin Memorial Prize is sponsored by Boots Opticians and comes with a prize of £200.

The Hamblin Memorial Prize recognises an ABDO member who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of opticians through innovation in practice, education, research or promotion of the profession. Nominees should demonstrate a clear and lasting impact that has benefited patients, practitioners and/or the wider profession.

Award criteria

Nominees should demonstrate exceptional service to the advancement of opticians through one or more of the following areas:

Innovation in professional practice

Recognising individuals who have introduced new approaches that improve patient care, clinical outcomes, business practice, or the delivery of optical services.

Examples:

  • development of innovative dispensing techniques or patient pathways
  • introduction of technology that enhances patient experience or outcomes
  • creation of models of practice that have been adopted more widely

Excellence in education and workforce development

Recognising those who have made a significant contribution to educating, mentoring or developing the next generation of opticians.

Examples:

  • designing educational programmes or resources
  • mentoring large numbers of professionals
  • advancing continuing professional development opportunities
  • improving access to education within the profession

Contribution to research and knowledge

Recognising individuals who have advanced the evidence base for dispensing optics and optical practice.

Examples:

  • conducting or supporting research projects
  • publishing influential papers or professional guidance
  • translating research into practical application
  • developing new knowledge that benefits practitioners or patients

Championing and promoting the profession

Recognising those who have raised the profile, influence and reputation of dispensing opticians.

Examples:

  • advocacy and representation at regional, national or international level
  • public engagement and awareness campaigns
  • leadership within professional bodies
  • promoting collaboration across healthcare professions

Leadership and professional influence

Recognising individuals whose leadership has inspired positive change across the profession.

Examples:

  • leading transformational projects
  • driving professional standards
  • building partnerships that advance the profession
  • supporting diversity, inclusion and accessibility in optics

Nominations are open from 17 August to 15 October, with the recipient announced during the online awards ceremony on 3 December.
