Featuring both contemporary and historical articles
ABDO has published a special keepsake supplement for members celebrating 100 years of the dispensing optics profession – included with the September issue of its journal Dispensing Optics (DO).
The commemorative supplement features both historical and contemporary articles – including a six-page, 100-year timeline of landmark moments for the profession and industry.
The 36-page supplement features both long-serving members – including those involved with the formation of ABDO in 1986 following the merger of the Association of Dispensing Opticians and the Faculty of Opticians – as well as early career members.
In her foreword to the supplement, ABDO president, Brenda Rennie, writes: “Members of ABDO, and its predecessor organisations dating back to the early 20th century, have a proud history of serving the public with professionalism, expertise and care.
“Our commitment to multi-disciplinary working, lifelong learning and the continued expansion of the profession’s scope of practice, will ensure dispensing optics continues to thrive for generations to come.”

Timeline spans 100 years of professional development
DO editor, Nicky Collinson, commented: “The history of the dispensing optics profession is both fascinating and extraordinary, and it has been an absolute pleasure to collate just a fraction of the memories and stories that exist for this souvenir supplement.
“We hope members will share the supplement within their practice teams, and perhaps even with patients in their ‘front-of-house’ areas.
“We are grateful to Essilor, Millmead Optical Group and Stepper for supporting this special project – showcasing their own unique histories and contributions to the profession,” added Nicky.
