College of Optometrists publishes three year strategic plan

The College of Optometrists has published its three year strategic plan for 2018-2021. The plan sets out what the College aims to achieve over the next three years during both a challenging and exciting time for the profession and the wider healthcare industry. The plan, developed in partnership with College Council members, highlights key external factors that will affect the College over the next three years and sets a series of ambitious objectives that aim to increase support for College members and shape the future of the profession. The strategy is built on feedback from College members and detailed discussions with Council.

The strategy focuses on four key objectives:

  • To support members in providing the best care they can for patients and help them meet the challenges of an evolving health care system in their daily practice.
  • To help members develop their expertise and gain the knowledge and skills they need to develop their careers.
  • To champion the value of optometrists in delivering eye care in all four nations.
  • To provide leadership by being an impartial, authoritative voice for the profession.

Speaking about the strategic plan, President of the College, Mary-Ann Sherratt said: At the College, we are here to help our members to deliver the best care for patients in whatever setting they work. We are also here to champion the profession, to provide an impartial and authoritative voice for optometry so that policy makers, commissioners and other health professionals are clear about the value that optometrists bring to eye care and understand that they are highly trained, clinical professionals. Our strategic plan sets out how we want to achieve this in the medium term and we endeavour to deliver on this plan over the next three years.”
