Commissioners’ Guide to Primary Eyecare Companies

LOCSU has published a new guide, aimed at commissioners which explains the benefits of the LOC Company Model. Using case examples of Primary Eyecare Companies, the Commissioners’ Guide to Primary Eyecare Companies, demonstrates how the Model can give commissioners:

• The opportunity to work with optical practices in their area in order to give patients the best access to community services and choice of provider
• Less complexity and cost through managing services via a single contract

The guide also summarises how commissioning community eye health pathways can reduce pressure on existing NHS services and help prevent avoidable sight loss.

The guide has been produced in response to feedback from some commissioners that they do not understand fully how the LOC Company Model works. LOCSU will be sending copies of the guide to commissioning leads in all Clinical Commissioning Groups and Commissioning Support Units in England. Every LOC chair will also receive a hard copy of the guide in the post.
