BOA Museum curator, Neil Handley, with two test charts in different languages
Dispensing optician (DO) Garry Kousoulou will be helping to raise awareness of colour vision deficiency solutions at the BOA Museum Open House this Sunday 13 September.
“My own interest is personal,” Garry told DO Online, “as my grandfather was colour deficient. Over the past year, I’ve been trying to help move the conversation from simply identifying colour vision deficiency [CVD] to understanding how people live with it, mask it and what the optical profession can do to support them.
“The museum event is particularly special – as it will provide a wonderful way to show how the profession’s understanding of colour vision testing has evolved – and what its history can teach us.
“It will also provide the opportunity to consider how public engagement can reduce the tendency for people to hide or simply work around their difficulties,” added Garry.

The Open House will also see one of the largest collections of Snellen and other test charts in the world, produced in different languages.
Ahead of the Open House, Garry will be speaking at the inaugural Vision Network UK CPD event for independent practitioners, being held in Preston.
His presentation is titled, ‘The hidden customer: how colour vision testing can grow your practice’ – and all sessions at the event are CPD-accredited for DOs, contact lens opticians and optometrists.
Garry will also be taking colour vision awareness, along with 88 different eye examination charts, back to the London New Year’s Day Parade on 1 January 2027.
“If any dispensing opticians, optometrists, students or other optical colleagues would like to join us, help raise awareness and represent the profession, they would be extremely welcome,” said Garry.
