Patients regain sight after being first to receive retinal tissue engineered from stem cells

Funding from the Macular Society contributed to the success of the stem cell based treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Results from a clinical study suggest the treatment is safe and effective according to Moorfields.

Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “We’re delighted to see this publication. We know how challenging this project has been over the past 10 years. Of course it’s still in its early days and there needs to be bigger trials to test whether this is effective in more people. But, it’s an exciting step along the way and we’re extremely proud to have been able to fund this project in its early days.”
