The Optical Workers’ Benevolent Fund (OWBF) was established by members of the manufacturing and supply side of optics nearly 20 years ago, led by respected industry stalwart Frank Norville. The aim then – as it remains today, is to provide support for people who do not qualify for the profession-led benevolent funds.
At this challenging time the trustees – who meet from a broad spectrum of optical backgrounds – want to highlight that funds are available for people who are finding life financially difficult.
“Ill health, issues of ageing and genuine problems faced by those who have worked within manufacturing optics may be eased by a grant from the Optical Workers’ Benevolent Fund,” say the trustees. “In the past we have helped working and retired lab technicians with mobility aids, installing a ground floor shower and even met funeral costs.
“We hear about some distressing cases of hardship faced by those who have worked within optical manufacturing but who do not qualify for other assistance. We aim to help those who have worked loyally to further our industry.”
The OWBF continues to be supported by the Optical Suppliers Association, and previously by the Federation of Manufacturing Opticians, with contributions having been made from the profits of Optrafair during pervious years.
“It is wonderful that we have such a charity dedicated to helping those who need a helping hand. UK optics is, to many of us, like a large, extended family – and we want to reach out to those who may be worried, and struggling to cope financially.
“In the past, we have supported lab technicians with a broad variety of financial worries. Please note this charity is not for professional optical employees, but for those working in labs,” added the trustees.
