Thinking Green Part 5: Saving water

Choose at least one activity to implement this month

In this month’s Thinking Green campaign article, we’re looking at how to save water.

Saving water is something we can all do by changing our habits and making a few quick checks. Saving water will cut your bills too.

This month’s quick wins:

  • Check appliances for leaks and get them fixed. A dripping tap can waste 12 to 20 litres of water a day
  • Put a reminder to non-clinical staff to put the plug in while washing their hands, rather than leave the tap running

How old are your toilets? Updating to a modern toilet cistern will reduce the amount of water per flush – and you can opt for dual flush toilets too. In the interim, look at adding a water bottle to the cistern, which will have the same effect.

If you have a lab, are you reusing water used in glazing equipment? There are options available to reuse water used in glazing or switch to water-free glazing. Do some research and plan in a more sustainable way to glaze when you are next due to update your equipment.

Making great progress? Why not submit a case study about your journey to sustainability?

And remember to pick at least one activity to work on this month, and watch out for another article next month with more inspiring sustainable ideas.

This article includes some of the tips that you can get after you complete the Sustainability Self Assessment tool which you can find here. If you haven’t yet done the questionnaire, it is a great place to start your journey to a more sustainable practice in 2022. You can also opt in to get tips to your inbox each week.
