Contact lens firm holds beach clean-up

CooperVision recently held a series of litter picks across the UK and Ireland to mark Global Recycling Day.

Nearly 50 employees, customers, friends and family joined in the effort to clear rubbish from the coast at Warsash, Hampshire.

Volunteers collected 44kg of waste, helping to make the beach cleaner and safer. More clean-ups took place at Langland Bay in Swansea, and Killiney Beach and Seapoint Beach in County Dublin.

CooperVision recently announced that all its one-day contact lenses distributed across the UK and Ireland are now plastic neutral. The move was made possible through a global partnership with Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that helps reduce waste and enable recycling.

The company buys credits that fund the collection, processing, and reuse of ocean-bound plastic waste. The amount is equal to the weight of the plastic used in its one-day contact lenses, including the blister and the outer carton packaging.

Doug Bairner, country manager for the UK and Ireland, said: “Our litter pick initiative is a chance for colleagues, customers, friends and family to have a positive impact on their local environment. These events are an important part of CooperVision’s wider sustainability approach and particularly our plastic neutral initiative in the UK & Ireland.

“It was great to see so many people pulling together and doing their bit to make their local area a cleaner place to live. The volunteers really made a difference – one piece of rubbish at a time – whilst also having some fun and fresh air.”
