Love Your Lenses Week: the dangers of switching

Leading eyecare professionals are set to discuss an important contact lens study in a webinar on Tuesday 14 June to mark Love Your Lenses Week 2022 (13-19 June).

The session, titled ‘Not all contact lenses are equal: the real-world significance’, will examine the dangers of substituting soft contact lens types.

Research published in Contact Lens & Anterior Eye earlier this year warned of the potential for patient dissatisfaction and adverse ocular events. It found: “Contact lens are medical devices which are prescribed and fitted; they should never be substituted for another lens type in the absence of a new prescription further to a full finalised fitting, for the simple reason that all soft contact lenses are not created equal.”

British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) president, Neil Retallic, said the panel: “will deliberate the scientific relevance of this paper and what it means, not just in everyday practice to eyecare professionals but also how it transfers across industry”.

Professor James Wolffsohn of Aston University, optometrist Indie Grewal, and Serena Dunwoody, senior professional affairs associate at Bausch+Lomb, will join Neil on the panel.

“As we celebrate Love Your Lenses Week, the webinar is a chance to consider that while not all soft contact lenses are created equal, they all can be loved the same,” Neil added.

The event, due to start at 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 June, is not CPD accredited. It is open to all, not just BCLA members or those who have registered for Love Your Lenses Week.
