100% Optical once again provided a fantastic opportunity to explore the latest developments in our sector, reconnect with friends and colleagues, and return home with fresh ideas – alongside those all-important CPD points.
This year, I also had the privilege of co-delivering a thought provoking CPD discussion workshop on ‘Content lenses vs. spectacle lenses’ for myopia management.
Delivered each day of the show, the session generated stimulating debate and strong engagement from delegates on the most effective ways to manage the increasing number of myopic children we are seeing in practice.
While advances in myopia management continue to grow, the reality remains that for many children there is still limited choice. Cost remains a major barrier for many families, restricting access to the full range of available interventions. With higher levels of myopia associated with potentially serious eye conditions later in life, it is vital that our sector continues to advocate for enhanced voucher values to help ensure more equitable access to effective myopia management options.
Recently, I also spent severalhighly enjoyable and educational days with third-year dispensing optician (DO) students at the Angel Campus of Capital City College and ABDO College. These visits never disappoint. Meeting those at the very beginning of their professional journeys is both inspiring and refreshing, and I am always struck by the quality of their questions, enthusiasm and thoughtful reflections on their future careers. Their passion for the profession is encouraging, and I wish each and every one of them the very best of luck as they take their next steps.
Over recent months, I have met a number of members in their practices as part of ABDO centenary celebrations campaign. These visits are a valuable opportunity for me to see first-hand just how varied, challenging and rewarding the role of a DO can be across different settings. With my term of office coming to a close at the end of May, I would encourage members not to leave it too late to request a practice visit.
For those attending the SightCare Conference in Birmingham this month, I will be attending on Monday 27 April – so please say hello. I look forward to seeing more of you throughout 2026 at optical shows and regional ABDO events. Finally, please visit the website and click the relevant link to find out more about ABDO’s centenary celebrations and to request a practice visit.
