GOC seeks DOs/CLOs for Hearing Panel

The General Optical Council (GOC) is seeking dispensing opticians (DOs) and/or contact lens opticians (CLOs) to join its Fitness to Practise Hearing Panel.

To enable potential applicants to find out more about the role and what’s involved, ABDO chief executive, Alistair Bridge, is hosting a webinar on Tuesday 13 June from 7.30pm to 8.30pm titled: ‘How to become a member of the GOC’s Fitness to Practise Hearing Panel’.

There are 10 vacancies on the panel – and the closing date to apply is 18 June.

During the webinar, GOC chief executive, Leonie Milliner, DO council member, William Stockdale, and DO hearing panel member, Clare Hayes, will explain:

  • What the role involves
  • How it would enable you to use your knowledge and skills to maintain confidence in the optical professions and protect the public
  • How to apply
  • What the recruitment process entails

Alistair said: “The members of the GOC’s Hearing Panel play a vital role in protecting the public and maintaining confidence in the optical professions. Fortunately, very few practitioners will find themselves involved in a case involving their fitness to practise, but for those who do, it is essential that they receive a fair hearing from fellow practitioners who have an up-to-date understanding of what is involved in working practice.

“I encourage members to put themselves forward for one of the 10 vacancies. It is a great opportunity to enhance your professional experience in a paid role and to do something worthwhile for your profession and the public,” added Alistair.

The role is part-time, taking around 12 to 16 days per year, including preparing for meetings. Hearings are usually via MS Teams. Members are paid a daily fee of £319.
