ABDO members urged to apply for GOC seat

ABDO is strongly encouraging its members to apply for a vacant registrant seat on the General Optical Council (GOC ), which can be filled by a dispensing optician.

ABDO will be hosting a webinar on Monday 30 October 2023 at 7pm to provide insights into what the role involves, the application procedure, and recruitment process.

At present there are five optometrists and only one dispensing optician (DO) on the GOC council. The Association is, therefore, keen to see DOs better represented.

The webinar will be hosted by ABDO CEO, Alistair Bridge, and will feature insights from GOC CEO, Leonie Milliner, GOC chair, Dr Anne Wright, and William Stockdale, registrant council member and DO.

Key dates to note

  • Applications close on 19 November
  • Interviews will be scheduled for January 2024
  • Start date for the successful candidate: March 2024

Alistair Bridge said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to serve on the GOC council and contribute to your regulator’s public protection role. Ensuring that the GOC understands the perspective of dispensing opticians is vitally important – and I encourage members to join the webinar to learn more about the role and how to apply.”
