Millmead Optical Group has achieved B Corp Certification, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards sustainability and social responsibility.

Founded in Guildford, Surrey, Millmead Optical Group boasts more than 75 years of experience in crafting eyewear, lenses, spectacle cases and accessories. In recent years, the company has committed to reducing the environmental impact of its optical products, production and distribution – led by CEO James Conway, a passionate advocate for sustainability.

To obtain B Corp Certification, the group implemented a range of sustainability, social responsibility and ethical initiatives including:

  • Installing energy-efficient LED lighting throughout its Liverpool facility, reducing energy waste and greenhouse emissions while enhancing productivity and employee well-being
  • Appointing Graeme Hasson as recycling and sustainability officer, resulting in the implementation of robust recycling practices and membership in the ISCC Association, a sustainability certification system
  • Introducing comprehensive cardboard and paper waste recycling, reducing landfill waste and minimising greenhouse gas emissions
  • Utilising FSC-certified and ethically sourced or fully recycled paper for office use and marketing materials
  • Implementing other eco-friendly measures, such as gifting metal water bottles to staff, promoting Zoom calls to reduce travel, and using MEI machines for waterless glazing
  • Manufacturing rPET spectacle cases in the UK, reducing carbon footprint and environmental damage by repurposing recycled plastic
  • Introducing the eco-conscious Cameo Sustain brand, featuring frames made from rPET and recyclable plastic demo lenses

James Conway commented: “We are thrilled to become a Certified B Corporation. The certification means the business meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability, which balances profit and purpose. B Corporations use profits and growth to positively impact their employees, communities and the environment. Positive social and environmental impact is something that a growing number of customers and consumers look for in their products, and Millmead hopes that this status will certify them as major industry frontrunners.”
