OSA to host on-stand lectures

Professor Pearse Keane

Ophthalmology’s role in healthcare will be highlighted on the Optical Suppliers’ Association (OSA) stand at 100% Optical. A series of seven lectures are planned, aimed at providing “a vision of the next five years of High Street practice”.

Speakers will include Pearse Keane, professor of artificial medical intelligence and consultant ophthalmologist at UCL’s Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital. Professor Keane will share his views on the advances and application of AI in eyecare on the Sunday of the show at 1pm.

Oculomics – what the eye can reveal about systemic and chronic disease – will be the subject of a lecture on the Monday at 11.30am to be delivered by senior research scientist, Dr Alistair Bounds, and retinal imaging scientist, Dr Emily Patterson. They will explore how non-invasive, cost-effective screening can establish key associations between structural biomarkers in the eye and systemic disease.

On Saturday from 1pm, the impact that ultra-widefield and confocal retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography and angiography can have on disease monitoring, particularly with geographic atrophy, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, will be discussed by optometrists Shail Patel and Ivan Cammack.

Mark van Grinsven will explore the sensitivity and specificity performance of an AI software system for detecting diabetic retinopathy – according to national protocols as the reference standard – on the Sunday at 3.45pm.

On the disease front, ophthalmologist and chemist, Peter Pham, will explore the role of sugars in inflammation and the underlying biology and biochemistry on the Saturday at 11.30am.

The myopia epidemic, and the importance of elevating awareness amongst parents and encouraging their engagement, is the focus for a lecture by Jason Higginbotham on the Sunday at 11.30am.

Lens manufacturing and glazing takes centre stage on the Sunday at 10.15am when Andy Sanders will deliver a lecture likely to be of interest to the whole practice team, with insights from a modern lab and what can now be achieved for patients.

Again, for the whole practice team, having a more sustainable business is the focus on Sunday at 2.15pm when environmentalist, Andrew Clark, will speak about the dangers of “doing nothing”, and what is achievable in terms of net zero carbon and plastic reduction targets.
