Following earlier guidance issued on 23 May 2025, Optometry Scotland (OS), supported by the UK representative bodies, has continued to engage positively with Disclosure Scotland to help the profession transition seamlessly and proportionately to the new protecting vulnerable groups (PVG) requirements for optical practices and clinicians.
OS has now published updated guidance for employers, employed dispensing opticians and contact lens opticians, locums and locums in emergencies. It has also clarified the position for non-registered staff.
Max Halford, ABDO clinical and policy director, said: “ABDO welcomes the updated guidance from Optometry Scotland, which has helpfully clarified a number of important issues.
“This marks new territory for dispensing and contact lens opticians in Scotland, and we remind all affected members of the importance of registering ahead of the deadline at the end of this month to ensure they remain in compliance with Scottish government regulations.
