The European Academy of Optometry and Optics (ECOO) has launched its new Blue Book 2025 to mark World Sight Day today (9 October).
Providing a comprehensive overview of the optometry and optics professions in Europe, the Blue Book was compiled by gathering comparable data from 27 member countries, in alignment with the World Council of Optometry’s Global Competency-Based Framework for Eye Care.
It highlights what ECOO describes as “the strengths of Europe’s eyecare workforce and provides an overview of how education, practice and professional roles connect to global standards”.
“The optical and optometric sector continues to play a vital role in safeguarding vision and eye health across Europe,” said ECOO president, Gabriëlle Janssen. “With increasing recognition of the importance of primary eyecare in public health systems, there is a pressing need for reliable, comparative information on how these professions are structured, educated, and regulated.”
In addition to the new Blue Book data, ECOO said it hadh observed a number of trends shaping eyecare across Europe in recent years. These included advances in technology reshaping how care is delivered, and a growing focus on sustainability.
