The 100th anniversary of our profession celebrates a century of skill, care and embracing innovation.
For 100 years, opticians have transformed prescriptions into precise, wearable solutions, improving vision and quality of life whilst also ensuring great comfort and aesthetics. This milestone honours the profession’s craftsmanship, adaptability and lasting commitment to helping people see clearly, now and in the future.
As part of the celebrations, I am very much looking forward to playing my part in our aim to visit 100 practices across the UK by the end of the year. For me, these will take place until the end of May, when Brenda Rennie takes over as president. Optometry Tomorrow in Harrogate on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 June is likely to be a highlight of 2026 where uniquely ABDO, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Nursing will be the official partners to the College of Optometrists’ flagship conference. This event will not only provide CPD points, but opportunities to learn, gain more skills and network with a like-minded community who prioritise eyecare. Registration opens this month via the College’s website.
February is awareness month for both age-related macular degeneration and low vision. Dispensing opticians and optometrists play a vital role in supporting patients with these conditions and addressing their concerns following diagnosis. These awareness initiatives should be actively promoted through websites and social media channels.
February will also see the annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships, shining a light on the amazing work being done by employers and apprentices across the country. This again brings attention to employers (England only) who are interested in enrolling students onto the ABDO FBDO Apprenticeship. I look forward to meeting members at 100% Optical from 28 February to 2 March in London, where I will be co-presenting a discussion workshop on each day, and at ABDO regional events.
