100 Years celebrations

ABDO president, Kevin Gutsell, visits Claire Hayden in her practice to present a fresh copy of her FBDO certificate

To mark the 100th anniversary of the profession in 2026, ABDO’s president Kevin Gutsell, vice president Brenda Rennie, and CEO Alistair Bridge, have set themselves a big challenge – to visit 100 practices across the country during 2026 to connect and engage with members.

Do you have something exciting to share? A milestone, a success story or an innovative idea? Then why not take this opportunity to share your successes during a centenary practice visit?

Haydenswan Eyecare drop-in

The ABDO president, along with newly-appointed communications and engagement director, Gavin Berkerey, recently visited ABDO member Claire Hayden at her practice, Haydenswan Eyecare.

Our photograph shows Kevin presenting Claire with a fresh copy of her dispensing optician (DO) qualification certificate – a proud reminder of her professional achievement.

The certificate will be featured in the practice to promote the DO qualification to patients, and will sit alongside the practice’s recent accolade: the 2025 Optician Sustainability Award.

During the visit, Kevin, Gavin and Claire discussed how to raise awareness and deepen the public’s understanding of the vital role that DOs play in patient eye health care.
