The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) has welcomed Laura Hing as the new regional lead for the Midlands.
Manager and co-owner of family-run Hing Opticians in Bedfordshire, Laura began her career in 1999 when she joined a small independent practice in Nottinghamshire for work experience. She then joined a larger optical chain as a clinical assistant, continuing to work there while training – working her way up to team leader. Laura began studying Optical Management and Dispensing at Anglia Polytechnic University in 2001, before joining Hing Opticians in 2005.
She qualified as a dispensing optician (DO) in 2008. In 2015, Laura became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers – the same year she and Ben Hing became co-owners of the practice.
Commenting on her appointment, Laura said, “I am a very proud DO and I really believe that with our incredible knowledge and training we can be integral to the continued growth of the optical industry and our place within the community-based eye care services.”
The ABDO regional leads play a vital role within the clinical and policy team, helping to deliver the organisation’s strategy around the evolving roles of DOs in UK practices.
They also contribute to the ongoing development and support of members throughout every stage of their careers. By offering a local point of contact, regional leads are uniquely positioned to understand and respond to the needs of members across different localities and nations, ensuring tailored support and guidance where it’s needed most.
“We are delighted to welcome Laura to the ABDO regional lead team,” said Max Halford, ABDO clinical and policy director. “As a practice owner, chair of Bedfordshire Local Optical Committee and a highly experienced DO, she brings a wealth of knowledge, insight and practical expertise to the role. Her background and enthusiasm for the profession will be a tremendous asset to our team and the ABDO members she will support across the Midlands.”
