Friends and colleagues of the late Michael Potter gathered at ABDO College, Godmersham Park, last week to commemorate the former ABDO head of marketing in a short ceremony to unveil a new set of display cases.

Michael Potter (1955-2018) joined ABDO as head of marketing in 2007 following a successful career in both retail and manufacturing optics.

Michael qualified as a dispensing optician in 1977. He was passionate about optics and the skills and dedication of his colleagues. He had a successful period in High Street optics before enjoying a long career with Rodenstock UK.

He created fresh branding for both ABDO and ABDO College, and was recognised for having set new high standards that would endure for years to come. The display cases, along with a plaque detailing Michael’s contributions, were unveiled by Michael’s wife Alison at a ceremony in front of ABDO staff and members.

ABDO general secretary, Tony Garrett, said: “Michael’s contribution to the profession cannot be overestimated. His part in the development of both ABDO and ABDO College is unrivalled and his love of the art of spectacle design is reflected in the collections housed in these two cabinets.”

Michael was also a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
