Post from the president

Kevin Gutsell FBDO (Hons) SLD
ABDO president

For me, June is always one of the most anticipated months of the year. The first day of summer will officially arrive on 21 June, signalling warm days ahead and, for many, a break from studies or a holiday with family or friends.

At the time of writing this month’s column, I was preparing to head to the 2025 National Optical Conference in Birmingham to attend several presentations and workshops. This multi-disciplinary conference always offers a good opportunity to hear updates from the Local Optical Committee Support Unit’s leadership team, and to learn more about the experiences of Local Optical Committee (LOC) members – many of whom are dispensing opticians. If you would like more information about LOCs, and how to get involved in the advancement of our profession, then please email Max Halford at mhalford@abdo.org.uk

A highlight of the ABDO president’s calendar is always the annual Graduation and Prize Giving Ceremony, which this year took place on 20 May. Many congratulations to this year’s graduates, prize winners and those receiving higher qualifications and certificates at Canterbury Cathedral. The only thing that outshines this beautiful location is the smiling faces of those receiving their awards.

It’s always a privilege to speak with the next generation of dispensing opticians and to hear about their future ambitions – whether it be further education or even becoming ABDO president one day. You will find a round-up of this year’s graduation ceremony on DO Online, with a full report to appear in next month’s issue.

I would also like to congratulate those who recently became the first to successfully achieve the ABDO Professional Certificate in Paediatric Eyecare.

Whilst on the topic of further education and learning, bookings will open soon for the 2025 ABDO Clinical Conference taking place this October. If the conference is anything like last year’s event, then it’s a must for all DOs.

Please also note that nominations for the ABDO Board elections close on Friday 13 June at 5pm. Board members play a key role in shaping ABDO’s strategy and overseeing the Association’s work, and are vital in representing the membership and progressing the profession. If you have a passion for this great profession, as well as belief and commitment, then do seek a nomination.

If you would like to speak with me about this, or any other topic, don’t hesitate to email me at kgutsell@abdo.org.uk
