Make eye protection a practice hot topic with all the family

As we head into summer 2025, we are again seeing the impact of global climate change with a dry and, at times, quite warm spring leading into spells of hot and thundery showers; weather patterns not conducive for many ‘standard’ crops. For us, this can mean an earlier start to the sunglass season. I am, though, somewhat concerned about the lack of young children wearing sunglasses (or sunglasses that fit well).

We have recently seen in the Mumsnet campaign, commissioned by ABDO, the College of Optometrists and the Optical Suppliers Association, that nine per cent of parents saw no reason to see an optometrist regarding their child’s eyes/vision unless ‘an issue is flagged up as a cause for concern’. The survey also showed that many parents were confused about when and where to seek eyecare for their kids, and that they would welcome clearer information and better access to support. ABDO is using this campaign to help shape communications regarding children’s eyecare in the future.

The promotion and advertising of sunglasses is, in my view, primarily focused on fashion, brand and appearance. Opticians are best placed to advise on the need for sun ‘eye’ protection. Websites and social media are useful tools for information about sunglasses – although I would strongly suggest discussing the sun protection needs of the whole family with your patients whenever possible. I am also keen to know how you check lenses in practice. How do you check the light transmission of lenses with tints and, more importantly, that of UV inhibitors (and cut off)?

We continue to see new eyewear, lens designs and coatings specifically for sports use. This raises an important question: how strong is our knowledge of sports-related optical products? And how effectively do we promote products designed to protect the eyes, or enhance vision and visual comfort during sporting activities? Sports protection is vital – although, for many, the ability to see and experience visual clarity is also important.

Where appropriate, refer to the relevant BSi standards and, equally important, the guidance provided by sports governing bodies. Much of this information can be found in ABDO’s Advice & Guidelines. Whether you’re staying in the UK or travelling abroad this summer, I hope you have a chance to unwind and return refreshed.
