Post from the president

Kevin Gutsell FBDO (Hons) SLD
ABDO president

As we welcome 2026, it’s a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved over the past year and to consider the potential developments that will shape the year ahead.

I have a strong sense that this, the 100th year of our profession, will be a landmark year for dispensing opticians (DOs) and for the sector more widely. Surely this must be the year when long promised opportunities begin to materialise through England’s overdue shift toward community-based care. There has been plenty of discussion, but real progress is still needed.

ABDO will continue to champion the recognition and advancement of all our members. I am confident that in 2026, DOs across the UK will see their roles expand – driven by an ageing population and an increasing emphasis on community-focused eyecare.

We expect greater involvement in clinical services, from myopia management to the care of common conditions such as dry eye. Advancements in technology will support the gathering and interpretation of more clinical data, while professional development will continue to grow in areas such as specialist practice, digital innovation, and evidence-based care.

Like many of you, I am greatly looking forward to Optometry Tomorrow 2026, hosted by the College of Optometrists at the Harrogate Convention Centre on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 June. ABDO is delighted to partner with the College of Optometrists for its flagship education event, alongside the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Nursing. This will be a standout event, bringing together eye health professionals to explore what can be achieved when we collaborate across the sector.

Membership renewal letters have now been sent out. Please be assured that the organisation and the ABDO Board remain fully committed to working on your behalf. Each member deserves far greater recognition, and your professional body will continue to speak up for you on the issues that matter most to our profession.

I look forward to meeting many of you throughout 2026 – at optical events, at ABDO regional gatherings, and hopefully in your practices as well.

In this special year of celebrating the past and inspiring the future, please feel free to get in touch with me at kgutsell@abdo.org.uk or visit our 100 Year celebrations webpage to arrange a practice visit.
