Retinoblastoma Awareness Week: take part

Retinoblastoma

A white pupil in photos is one symptom of retinoblastoma

The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is calling on optical practices to get ready for World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, from 10 to 16 May.

The annual campaign raises awareness of this rare eye cancer that mainly affects children under six. It highlights the critical importance of early detection and swift referral.

Routine eye examinations can reveal symptoms such as a white pupil (leukocoria) or a squint, which may go unnoticed by parents. By promoting awareness practices can help ensure more children receive timely diagnosis and treatment, protecting eyes, sight and lives., said the charity.

CHECT has created a pack containing:

  • Social media content
  • Images and graphics
  • Awareness messaging guidance
  • Printable posters and educational materials

CHECT will also share posts across social media throughout the week. Practices can use the hashtag #RbWeekFree signs and symptoms leaflets and posters are also available.

Ideas for events include:

  • Hold a ‘crazy glasses day’, wearing fun and wacky spectacles to spark conversations. CHECT has free downloadable glasses templates
  • Sign up for a fundraising challenge. Options include the Great North Run, the National Three Peaks Challenge or a tandem skydive
  • Host a bake sale

CHECT’s fundraising manager can provide support, ideas and resources via email at fundraising@chect.org.uk or telephone 020 7377 5578.
