TFOS DEWS III report published

The Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) DEWS III report is now available to read in an open access and special American Journal of Ophthalmology supplement.

Compiled by as many as 80 experts from 18 countries, the report updates the recommendations and conclusions of TFOS DEWS II regarding the sub-classification, diagnostic methodology, and management and therapy of dry eye disease.

It also features a digest, highlighting new advances in other TFOS DEWS II topics, including:

  • Sex, gender and hormones
  • Epidemiology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Tear film
  • Pain and sensation
  • Iatrogenic dry eye
  • Clinical trial design.

Presentations from the report were featured in the programme of the British Contact Lens Association’s recent clinical conference.

An executive summary of the report will be submitted to the AJO within a month, and then later published and linked to the supplement.

ABDO clinical and policy director, Max Halford, said: “I would strongly encourage all dispensing opticians to engage with the TFOS reports, especially the lifestyle reports, which offer valuable insights into both the clinical management and lived experience of dry eye. Up-skilling in this area will not only enhance clinical care but also support more empathetic, patient-centred conversations in practice.”
