ABDO CPD launches online peer discussion

ABDO CPD is launching new online CET sessions to support ABDO members with their professional education requirements during the coronavirus disruption.

“We are aware many members will be concerned about their ability to obtain interactive CET points during social-distancing measures,” said Alex Webster, ABDO head of CET. “So from Monday 6 April, online peer discussion sessions will be available exclusively for ABDO members.”

Peer discussion is an interactive form of CET with discussion of pre-determined cases or scenarios with peers. Successful completion of an online peer discussion session will enable members to achieve three interactive CET points.

“These sessions are limited to 10 participants by the General Optical Council, therefore we will be repeating the same sessions regularly over the coming weeks,” explained Alex. “We urge anyone who books onto a session, but then is not able to take part, to cancel their place as soon as possible, allowing other members to take part.”

The sessions will be delivered using the GoToMeeting conferencing platform and will require a strong internet connection. All participants will need to use both audio and video, and headphones are recommended to enhance sound quality.

ABDO CPD will also be running a dispensing-based peer discussion, as well a session that is only available for contact lens practitioners. New sessions and discussion topics will be added as they become available.

Alongside the new online peer discussions, regular monthly interactive CET webinars will continue.

Past ABDO president, Fiona Anderson, will deliver the next CET webinar on Tuesday 28 April. “Fiona will be testing the fine line that can be found between selling and excellence in patient care in optical practice,” Alex said.
