Newsome’s Notes

Student numbers are often a good indicator of what the future holds for our profession, and this year continues to proffer good news.

ABDO works closely with all affiliated institutes: ABDO College, Bradford College, City and Islington, Glasgow Caledonian and UCLan. While current third-year figures are low due to the pandemic, intake numbers have recovered – increasing each year and now back to pre-pandemic figures.

For some institutes, 2023 first-year cohorts are predicted to yield a record intake. From my perspective, the ABDO Level 6 Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing remains a successful route to registration. Growing student numbers and interest in the courses at all institutes this year shows ophthalmic dispensing as a profession is looking rosy.

Also of interest is the growing number of people enrolling on optical assistant (OA) courses, through a formal training institute or via work-based initiatives where ABDO recognises courses and has accredited pathways. These courses enable staff to develop their careers from the foundations of a practice environment, taking their first steps into an optical education.

What is really encouraging is the number of candidates who complete an OA course and continue their optical training by transferring onto the FBDO programme. It seems that OA courses give confidence to those who complete them, providing a pathway for people who may have otherwise remained in the role or left optical employment without exploring their own potential.

Being involved with OA training has been positive in every way. The OA courses that prepare students to transfer to the full FBDO course, if they wish, facilitate the growth of our profession from the grass roots. As an awarding body, ABDO is always happy to work with prospective partners to develop career pathways.

This good news about healthy intake numbers, alongside the courses supporting those in their early careers, means ABDO continues to maintain the standards of qualified professionals entering the register. Our association also provides ongoing support and professional development for members for the duration of their careers, making ABDO an organisation to be proud of.
